BOCAUE — Thailand is on pace to score its target number of goals in the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup following its victory over Indonesia on Saturday night.
Thai star striker Teerasil Dangda scored a hat trick as the War Elephants, overwhelming favorites to win the title, avoided an upset with a 4-2 win over Indonesia at the Philippine Sports Stadium.
“The goal is to score 12,” said Thailand coach Kiatisuk Senamuang through an interpreter during the postmatch press conference.
In its campaign two years ago Thailand scored 14, seven during the preliminary phase, en route to the title.
The War Elephants needed two goals from Teerasil in the final 25 minutes of the match. Teerasil connected on a low shot in the 79th minute, before slotting home another goal in the 94th minute.
“It was a hard game. Teamwork made us come back in this game,” said Senamuang, who hopes the War Elephants learned their lesson as they prepare for the match against Singapore on Tuesday.
“We were careless. Indonesia got the two goals from crosses. We have to correct it before the next game,” said Senamuang.
Meanwhile, Indonesia coach Alfred Reidl was satisfied to push Thailand throughout.
“It was an interesting match. It was good to see. I have to say that Thailand deserved the win. We got two very crazy goals in my eyes,” said Reidl.
