THE Philippine boys team started off its campaign with a 1-0 win over Nicaragua but bowed to Burundi, 0-4, in the 2014 Street Child World Cup in Rio De Janeiro.
Gawad Kalinga’s Kenneth scored the lone goal for the Filipino booters against Nicaragua.
According to Team Philippines, complete names of the players were withheld due to child protection policies.
The Philippines tries to bounce back in Group 2 play with still Tanzania and Argentina on its schedule.
“It was a mixed start to the group stage for us but still one to be proud of. We have our first three points of the campaign and it puts our destiny in our own hands as despite the loss to Burundi, who will most likely win the group,” said head coach Roy Moore.
Moore said the kids got a treat when the Filipino team met Brazilian legend Bebeto, who spoke about hard work and football.
“My dream was to buy a house for my mother and help my family. Football helped me achieve that,” Moore quoted Bebeto as saying.
Earlier, the Philippine girls team defeated South Africa, 9-0.
