STALLION thrived in a better-conditioned pitch to blast Sta. Lucia, 6-0, and score its first victory in the United Football League Cup at the Marikina Sports Complex Tuesday night.
Rufo Sanchez fired five goals, while Young Jae Pi joined the scoring spree late in the game as Stallion gained three points to tie defending champion Philippine Air Force in second place in Group D.
Sanchez, the 25-year-old Spanish striker, later commended the quality of the pitch, saying he liked it better than The Fields in Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, where they lost a surprising 0-2 decision to Philippine Army in their first match two weeks ago.
“It’s better than Nuvali,” he said through an interpreter.
Despite missing the services of national team recruit Jason de Jong, Stallion was in cruise control the whole night, with Sanchez scoring four goals right in the first half.
Sanchez put the outcome of the game beyond doubt when he scored anew in the 67th minute, which he said was his favorite goal of the match, before Pi added another goal five minutes before full time.
Sta. Lucia failed to get any rhythm in its first game in the tournament to stay at the bottom of the standings.
