Sparks figure out Airmen puzzle with rout

    Feb 21, 2013

LOYALA Meralco finally figured out the Philippine Air Force puzzle with a 4-0 drubbing of the Airmen on Thursday night to gain the lead in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.

In their first win against the Airmen in four games including the 2011 UFL Cup Finals, the Sparks put on another brilliant offensive display and gain the full three points that put them level with defending champion Global FC and Stallion-Sta. Lucia FC on top with nine points.

“I guess that’s one of our motivations also to come out strong today,” Sparks coach Vince Santos said, referring to his team’s recent history against the Airmen. “Before, it was the same. We created chances, we didn’t score, and they punished us.”

It was a totally different story on Thursday night as the Sparks immediately went up a minute into the game when Hartman scored the quickest goal so far this season.

Mark Hartmann fired a brace, while Phil Younghusband and Freddy Gonzalez both found the back of the net once for the Sparks, who went a man down the whole second half after defender Chad Gould was ejected late in the first half for getting booked with a red card.

“I guess that’s one of our motivations also to come out strong today,” Sparks coach Vince Santos said, referring to his team’s recent history against the Airmen. “Before, it was the same. We created chances, we didn’t score, and they punished us.”
