THE management of the Philippine men’s football team has prepared a shortlist of worthy foreign candidates ahead of the departure of Azkals coach Michael Weiss.
Weiss' days appeared numbered since last month when Azkals manager Dan Palami made no effort to deny the possibility of a coaching change as they evaluate the performance of the German whose one-year contract is to end in March.
The Philippine Football Federation is expected to make an official announcement on Wednesday regarding the future of the 48-year-old Weiss.
Although still refusing to confirm the termination of Weiss' contract, Palami on Sunday revealed he has six possible choices for replacement.
“Whatever the announcement is, I’ve prepared already for any eventuality and actually asked for CVs from different sources so that we could immediately find a replacement if ever the PFF decides to indeed not to extend the contract of Michael Weiss,” Palami said. “And I think the direction is towards that.”
Palami, the man behind the Azkals’ rise to prominence that has enabled Philippine football to reach new heights, said the six applicants are from Spain, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, US, Germany, and Montenegro.
And the 43-year-old businessman is hoping to interview each one over a 15-day period before making his selection.
“I can’t memorize their names because I look at the credentials first. And some of them have playing experiences with Barcelona, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool,” Palami said.
“These are the caliber of coaches we’re looking at right now.”
Meanwhile, it was bared that assistant coach Edwin Cabalida will take over the Azkals’ initial practice sessions this month.
