CERES-LA Salle accomplished what Kaya FC failed to do for now as it became the first Philippine club to reach the knockout stage of the Asian Football Confederation Cup on Tuesday night.
A scoreless draw against Selangor FC in the opponent’s turf at the Selayang Municipal Stadium in Malaysia was enough for Ceres to clinch a berth in the Round of 16 of the second-tier club competition in the continent.
A victory by cellar-dwelling Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi over Tampines Rovers also benefited Ceres, which stayed on top with nine points as Tampines dropped to third with seven markers after five matches in Group E.
Kaya FC can still follow suit with a win against New Radiant in its final match in Group F.
Ceres can secure the top spot with a win over Sheik Jamal on May 10 in a home match at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.
