THE Philippines edged the island country of Niue in the battle for the Plate and ninth place in the mixed open division of the Federation of International Touch World Cup recently in New South Wales, Australia.

It was a big win for the Pythons, who had been held to a draw by Niue in their previous encounter.

The Philippines earlier scored an 11-7 win over the Netherlands and dropped a 5-6 decision to Samoa before defeating Wales, 5-3, in Pool D.

The Pythons overcame five of their next six opponents, including South Africa, Fiji, and the US.

"We won with only one loss the whole tournament, won the Plate Division, and more importantly, we have learned so much as a team,” said mixed open team captain Christian Alonzo.

The Philippine women's team finished 12th.
