THE Philippine girls team put up a gallant stand before bowing to football powerhouse Brazil, 0-1, settling for the silver medal in the 2014 Street Child World Cup on Sunday in Rio De Janeiro (Monday, Manila time).
The loss was the first in the tournament for the Filipina booters and ended their amazing run to the finals that saw them beat England and Mozambique in the playoffs.
Nevertheless, the silver medal finish by the Filipina booters is being considered an incredible feat losing the title to football hotbed Brazil, which will also host the 2014 Fifa World Cup.
“Gutted. But so proud of the girls,” said team leader and head coach Roy Moore on his Twitter account of the squad which is composed of players from Payatas FC, SOS Village of Davao, Gawad Kalinga, Mango, and Josie’s Angels.
The Street Child World Cup is a competition for street kids that gives them opportunities through football.
