THE Philippine Azkals dropped their home leg in the semifinals of the AFF Suzuki Cup, succumbing to Vietnam 2-1 on Sunday at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.
Forwards Nguyen Anh Duc and Phan Van Duc scored on opposite halves as they sank the Azkals who lost for the first time in this competition.
The result spoiled the country's first-ever goal in the semis phase of the tournament as they had goalless encounters against Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand in the previous times they made this stage.
Nguyen scored early for the visitors, as he headed home a beautiful cross past Michael Falkesgaard in the 12 minute to stun the 5,849 people in attendance.
Patrick Reichelt then made history shortly before halftime, scoring off a Phil Younghusband cross from the left flank to even the score by the interval.
Phan then wasted little time in getting one back for Vietnam, scoring in the 48th minute after beating the Azkals' offside trap and capitalizing on his one on one moment with Falkesgaard.
The Azkals had a couple of chances to equalize including one in the 82nd minute but Reichelt blew his chance at a second goal after sending his ball high.
The Azkals now travel to My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on Thursday looking to make history yet anew, but they have a herculean task at hand as they try to erase a 2-1 aggregate deficit.
