THE Philippine Azkals are going through to the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals after holding on to a goalless draw against Indonesia on Sunday at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
The Azkals finished the group stage at second place with eight points, getting a huge hand from Thailand which beat Singapore 3-0 in their match that was played simultaneously.
Because of the win, Singapore got booted out as they ended with six points as the War Elephants topped the group with 10 points.
Needing a victory before the game to secure their spot, the Azkals took a methodical approach as they braced for a highly physical matchup against the hosts.
Skipper Phil Younghusband was the first casualty of the match as he was taken directly to the hospital after getting cut open in a battle for the ball nearly 25 minutes into the match.
The Indons actually had their moments in the second half, getting opportunities in one stretch but nothing too threatening.
The biggest chance came in the 87th minute for the Azkals when Manny Ott's curling free kick from just outside the box got saved by 'keeper Andritany Ardhiyasa.
The Azkals will now be hosting Group A winners Vietnam on Sunday, December 2 at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.
