Philippine football team plays first friendly in 17 years against China in Guangzhou

    May 25, 2017

FOR the first time in 17 years, the Philippine Men's National Football Team is set to play with powerhouse China as they play a friendly on June 7 in Guangzhou.

The last time the two teams met was in year 2000 when China trashed the Philippines, 8-0.

Ranked 81st in the world, this will be a huge boost for the 127th ranked Azkals ahead of their away match in Dunshabe against Tajikistan on June 13 in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.

“We will have an international friendly between China PR and Philippines on 7 June,” said PFF Secretary General Ed Gastanes.

“We will now talk to the PFL clubs to explore the possibility of release of players for national team duties earlier than 5 June 2017.”

China has already qualified for the Asian Cup after a runner-up finish in their Group in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

The Azkals, meanwhile, will have to get a top two finish in their group which also includes Yemen and Nepal.
