MERALCO Manila and Global Cebu engaged in a hard fought battle in the Philippines Football League but settled for a 2-2 draw on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Subject of transfer rumors the past few days, Younghusband brothers James and Phil scored on opposite halves for the Sparks but even that wasn't enough to get all three points.
Darryl Roberts proved to be a thorn on the hosts' side, notching a brace for the visitors as the two squads split the points.
"Coming from behind it was a good performance from the players for not giving up in the game. We were looking for that third goal but it didn't come," said Global coach Marjo Allado.
"Now of course the lesson to be learned in this game is not giving a penalty. We weren't expecting that. It's the referee's call and we have to respect that," he added.
James Younghusband fired the opener for the Sparks on the 29th minute after following up on a Joaco Canas' attempt inside the box which hit the near post. It wasn't long til Roberts got the equalizer for the Cebuano side, scoring on a solo effort in the 34th minute to level the game at one apiece.
It was Phil Younghusband's turn to get on the board, converting a penalty in the 54th minute after Tahj Minniecon was hacked in the box.
Roberts once again came to Global's rescue as he chipped Ric Padilla to get the equalizer. Roberts had a chance to get his hat trick and the possible winner on the 87th minute but he opted to defer to Misagh Bahadoran who shot wide.
Still, the draw kept Meralco ahead on top as they scored their 24th point in 11 games. Global on the other hand stayed third with 22 points in 12 games.
