Under-23 Azkals vying in UFL preseason tourney

Brian Reid's Under-23 Azkals are still hopeful of making the Philippine delegation to the Southeast Asian Games.

UNDER a cloud of uncertainty, the Philippine 23-Under men’s football team remains committed to its goal.

The U-23 Azkals step up their buildup for the Southeast Asian Games as they vie in the preseason tournament of the United Football League that kicks off on Sunday at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.

The Brian Reid-mentored squad, which didn't make the initial list but is still on the 'waiting list' for the delegation to the biennial event, has been accepted as among the teams participating in the preseason competition of the country’s premier football league last Thursday.

The Philippine Football Federation sent the request on the team’s participation to the league last August 8.

“This is our way of helping the team in its preparations and inclusion to the forthcoming 27th Southeast Asian Games in December,” read the letter addressed to the PFF and signed by UFL assistant technical director Richie Gannaban.

PFF general secretary Edwin Gastanes welcomed the development as a “big morale boost” to the team.

The preseason competition runs until October 6 in time for the UFL Cup.
