STALLION FC pounced on an early miscue by defending champion Kaya FC to hack out a 1-0 victory and jumpstart its United Football League Cup campaign on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Stallions caught Kaya’s defense napping in one play in the first half and Ghanaian striker Jordan Mintah capitalized by scoring the marginal goal on a breakaway, before they held the fort in the second half.
“The important thing is we came out with the win and started the season on a strong note,” Stallions coach Ernie Nierras said.
“We really wanted to face Kaya right away, so we didn’t have to worry about them the rest of the group stage,” he added of their longtime rival.
The Stallions thus gained a share of the early lead with opening-day winner JP Voltes and Forza.
Kaya missed playing-coach Chris Greatwich, who served a suspension he incurred in the last Cup, but still had chances to equalize in the grind-out battle.
Earlier, Green Archers United shut out Nomads, 4-0, to claim a piece of the lead in Group B with Global FC.
