LEFT with a depleted lineup, Global FC lost to Loyola Meralco by default in the preseason finale of the United Football League (UFL) on Thursday night at the Emperador Stadium in McKinley Hill.
With 11 mainstays released to the national team, the former Cup champions had only seven players available, four short of the required starters.
Global mainstays Marwin Angeles, Misagh Bahadoran, Jerry Barbaso, Jeffrey Christiaens, Jason de Jong, Juani Guirado, Mark Hartmann, Ed Sacapaño, and new overseas-based acquisitions Angel Guirado and Paul Mulders are with the Azkals in Bacolod for the Peace Cup set to kick off on Friday night at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
Another recruit, promising Davaoeño defender Amani Aguinaldo, is with the Teen Azkals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the Asian Football Confederation Under-19 Qualifiers.
Likewise, the squad is also decimated by suspensions and injuries, including Carli de Murga who suffered a torn ligament in the knee.
In a statement posted on its website, Global said it requested the UFL to postpone and reschedule the match, only for the motion to be denied.
Reached by Spin.ph on Friday, UFL media officer Jing Jamlang said both Global and Meralco have already fulfilled their purpose in the preseason, which was meant to prepare them for the UFL Cup, which opens on Saturday.
“It was imperative to proceed as scheduled, and not have the preseason spill over into the UFL Cup,” Jamlang said.
Provincial powerhouse Ceres FC makes it debut in the Cup when it takes on Manila Jeepney at 8 p.m. after former Division 2 champion Pachanga-Diliman faces Laos two hours earlier also at the Emperador Stadium.
