End of an era as Ceres-Negros FC set for new ownership

Top PH football club in talks with potential new owners
    Jul 8, 2020

CERES-Negros FC, the most successful Filipino football club, will be selling its club to a new investor.

In a statement, the club said that it is "currently in talks with investors who will be taking over the management and ownership of the club in preparation for the fourth season of the Philippines Football League (PFL) as well as the resumption of the campaign in the AFC Cup."

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has also been informed of the decision, with general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes unveiling the news on a virtual press conference on Wednesday.

"I would like to inform you that the club is currently in talks with investors who will take over management and ownership of the club going forward," Gastanes quoted Ceres general manager Ace Bright in the letter to the PFF.

Ceres-Negros FC has been the torch bearer for Philippine football for the past few years, winning three PFL titles and a Copa Paulino Alcantara crown last season behind the leadership of national team staples Stephan Schrock and Spanish forward Bienvenido Marañon.

The Busmen also represented the country in international competition, reaching the final phase of the AFC Champions League qualifying twice, as well as ruling the ASEAN zone of the AFC Cup in 2017 and making it to the ASEAN zonal Final against Home United in 2018. It also reached the semifinal last year before bowing to Hanoi FC.

It's a bitter end to Ceres' run, with chairman Leo Rey Yanson set to relinquish his duties to the new owners.

"This is one of the toughest decisions made by Mr. Yanson, whose passion for football was reflected at the way he poured his personal resources and steered the club to unprecedented heights since it was formed eight years ago," the statement read.

"Through Ceres-Negros FC, Mr. Yanson was able to share his love for the game to his countrymen. While the pandemic has struck hard on businesses all over the world, Ceres has made its best efforts to compensate its players and staff."
