THE two best football clubs in the country rekindle their rivalry as Ceres-LA Salle and Global FC collide for the United Football League Cup on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The UFL heavyweights face off in the Cup Final at 8:15 p.m. with the winner booking a ticket to the Asian Football Confederation Cup next year.
Ceres has had Global’s number in their last few meetings, but is weary from juggling the local and continental tournament, coming off a 2-1 win over Tampines Rovers in the AFC Cup, barely a week after outlasting Kaya FC, 8-7, on penalties in the UFL Cup semifinal.
“Our schedule has been tight…and maybe there’s fatigue factor, but we’re doing well, so we just have to continue,” Ceres coach Frank Muescan said in the pre-match press conference on Friday. “We have a positive outlook.”
Global, which blanked Stallion FC, 2-0, in the Final Four, is looking for redemption after getting suspended in the last Cup for violating the foreigner player rule.
“I don’t think there’s extra motivation from what happened,” Global coach Leigh Manson insisted. “The motivation is we want to beat the team we think is our biggest rival.”
Azkals teammates turn into foes as national standouts Misagh Bahadoran and Daisuke Sato face off against Manny Ott and Stephan Schrock, among others.
“We’ll put everything on the field and the result will come,” Bahadoran said.
Kaya and Stallion face off for third place earlier at 5:15 p.m.
