PFF finalizing negotiations with Rwanda XI for four-nation Peace Cup

    Sep 25, 2013

THE Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is tying the loose ends on negotiations that would make Rwanda among the opponents of the Azkals in the second edition of the Peace Cup.

The three-day, four-nation international tournament will be staged October 11 to 15 in Bacolod City.

“We are finalizing (the negotiations)… Rwanda is almost there,” PFF general secretary Edwin Gastanes said.

If plans push through, the African squad listed 131st in the latest world rankings, will be the first team that will have a higher ranking than the Azkals in the competition.

The Filipino booters, currently ranked 141st, captured the inaugural Peace Cup crown — their first international title in almost a century — by sweeping their three assignments.

But the Azkals’ opponents last year — Guam, Macau, and Chinese Tapei — were all ranked lower than them.

Chinese Taipei has already confirmed its participation this year, making the Filipinos’ Asian neighbor the only returning squad.

The PFF is also eyeing another African country and stronger opponent in Uganda, ranked 81st in the Fifa table, to complete the list of participants.
