Pakistan win gives Azkals lifeline in Peace Cup

Oct 13, 2013

PAKISTAN provided a lifeline for the Philippine men’s football team as it edged out Chinese Taipei, 1-0, in the Peace Cup on Sunday at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

The Pakistani victory vaulted them to the top spot with three points and a goal difference of +1 and kept the door open for the Azkals to defend the title they captured in the inaugural edition last year.

The Filipino booters, who lost to Chinese Taipei, 1-2, on Friday and are in third place without a point and a -1 GD to show, now need to win by two goals against Pakistan in the final day of the tournament on Tuesday to retain the crown.

Pakistan unlocked the Taiwanese defense early on, with Zeshan Rehman firing the lone goal that mattered seven minutes into the game.

Pakistan conjured another chance a minute before second-half stoppage time when Mohammed Ali headed a shot that was only denied by the Taiwanese keeper.
