Holders FEU fights for life as Tamaraws battle league-leading UP Maroons in UAAP football

DEFENDING champion Far Eastern University tries to avoid early elimination as it takes on league-leading University of the Philippines on Thursday in the UAAP Season 78 men’s football tournament at the Moro Lorenzo Field of Ateneo de Manila.

Entering the match fifth in the standings, FEU needs a win to keep alive their hopes of making it to the semifinals.

Kickoff is at 2 p.m.

University of Santo Tomas tries to secure a semifinal spot and avoid playoff complications as it tackles La Salle at 4 p.m. in the final match of the double-round eliminations.

It will be a tough match for FEU against UP. The Maroons, featuring Daniel Gadia, Kintaro Miyagi and goalkeeper Ace Villanueva, has conceded only five goals this season.

FEU is coming off a 0-1 loss to Ateneo last week to remain at 24 points.

Tamaraws rookie striker Rico Andes has struggled in recent games and the team is starting to feel the loss of midfielder Arnel Amita due to injury.

The Growling Tigers are tied with the Blue Eagles at 25 points, and a draw will be enough to join the Maroons and the Green Archers in the Final Four.

La Salle, with 26 points, is aiming for a win to claim the No. 1 ranking in the semifinals.

A UST defeat, coupled with a FEU victory or draw, will send the Golden Booters to a playoff with Ateneo for the last spot in the semis.

Standings: UP 27 pts, DLSU 26, Ateneo 25, UST 25, FEU 24, NU 17, AdU 4, UE 1.
