MERALCO Manila continued its onslaught in the Philippines Football League as it beat 10-man Kaya Makati, 2-0, in a highly physical encounter on Saturday at the University of Makati field.

Joaco Canas and Phil Younghusband scored to lead the Sparks to an impressive away victory against their Metro Manila rivals.

"Tough match. Kaya wanted to win so it all boiled down to concentration in the end," said Meralco head coach Aris Caslib.

Canas opened the scoring for the visitors in the 43rd minute, when he headed in the ball into the back of the net off a set piece.

But things changed in the second half when Kaya forward Jordan Mintah was given a straight red card for a collision with Jake Morallo coming off a corner.

Phil Younghusband scored his second goal in the tournament as he beat Zach Banzon on the penalty in the 66th minute.

Playing with 10 men for the fourth straight time, Kaya tried to make a game out of it but ultimately failed to make any advances.

"It was a tough game against Kaya. It's difficult to score chances in the pitch. This game's about winning the game, not about how it's played," said Younghusband.

Kaya coach Noel Marcaida was obviously not happy with the red card but gave props to his squad for fighting until the end.

"I'm satisfied with the way we performed. One man down and we still played and had our chances," said Marcaida.

"I saw it. It's not a red card no contact at all."

The win moved Meralco to 15 points after five games while Kaya slid to third with 10.
