JP Voltes stunned title favorite Global FC, 2-0, on Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to keep the door slightly open to the closest pursuer in the United Football League title race.
The Japanese-loaded side struck in each half to deal Global its first loss of the season in 16 matches.
Former Global defender Masaki Yanagawa turned into a villain against his former club, unlocking the Global defense late in the first half, before Takashi Odawara put the exclamation point with a goal near second-half stoppage time.
Despite moving up to second spot after hiking its total to 35 points in 17 matches, Voltes has no chance to catch up with Global, leaving third-running Loyola Meralco, toting 34 markers in 15 outings, and fourth-ranked Ceres-La Salle as the only squads that can challenge Global.
The Sparks, however, need to win their last four matches and hope that Global loses its last three to turn the tables.
Global, enjoying 41 points in 16 matches, only needs two more wins to clinch the crown its last won two years ago.
