Lawyer claims crane operator saw "no problems" before fatal accident in Brazil World Cup stadium

THE lawyer of the crane operator involved in last week's fatal accident at the Sao Paulo stadium told police Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time) that there were no problems prior to the incident at the site of the opening match of the 2014 World Cup.

Attorney Carlos Kauffmann said crane operator Jose Walter Joaquim's 1 1/2 hour-long statement to police was his first since the Nov. 27 accident when the crane lifting a 500-ton piece of roofing collapsed, killing two construction workers.

A police investigation is trying to determine the cause of the accident, and there is speculation that human error, a problem with the crane and the possibility that the rain-soaked ground gave way to the weight of the metal structure.
