KAYA FC-Iloilo defeated Eastern FC, 2-1, on Thursday, marking the first time that a Philippine club won a match in the AFC Champions League Two.
Robert Lopez Mendy scored the winning goal on a penalty in the 86th minute in the match held at the Mong Kok Stadium in Hong Kong, and Kaya finally captured the full three points and the first win of the Philippines since the current format of the AFC Champions League was structured into two tiers – the Elite and the Two, this season.
Daizo Horikoshi got Kaya ahead in the 32nd, also on a penalty, but Marcos Gondra equalized for Eastern FC in the 70th.
The Philippines Football League side is at the bottom of Group C with three points, with Eastern FC at third also with three points but with a superior goals scored.
But Kaya got a measure of revenge after it lost to Eastern FC, 2-1, in their November 7 match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, while also keeping its slim hopes of advancing to the next round.
Sanfreece Hiroshima occupies first place in Group C with 12 points, followed by Sydney FC with six points.
Over at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, Dynamic Herb Cebu FC lost to Muangthong United, 9-2.
Cebu FC couldn't duplicate its 1-1 draw against the Thailand side earlier this month to stay at the bottom of Group H with one point.
