Kaya FC beat Pasargad, 2-1, on Thursday night at the Rizal Stadium to grab top spot from Global as the United Football League First Division hit its most crucial phase.
National team skipper Aly Borromeo and Adrian Semblat struck for Kaya, which won its 12th game against three draws and two losses for 39 points -- a point ahead of Global in the tournament ending on June 30.
Borromeo, who replaced suspended defender Jason Sabio in the starting lineup, showed he was fully recovered from an anterior cruciate ligament injury as he kicked off the scoring with a goal off a penalty kick in the 20th minute.
“This game helped me a lot in gaining my confidence,” said Borromeo, who played the full 90 minutes.
Semblat followed suit 11 minutes after to give Kaya a comfortable 2-0 lead entering the half.
Pasargad’s Mohammed Ohadi kept the game exciting early in the second half after scoring in the 51st minute.
“We got overconfident after the first half,” Borromeo said. “Pasargad put a lot of pressure on us and they had many scoring chances.”
Pasargad, who failed to keep the momentum, dropped its eighth game against six wins and three draws for a total of 21 points.
Earlier, Stallion Gilligan’s blanked Philippine Army, 3-0, in a no-bearing game.
