JPV Marikina continued to build on its momentum in the Philippines Football League as it racked up another win and another clean sheet after a 2-0 victory over Ilocos United on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Fresh off its 4-0 drubbing of Stallion Laguna midweek, the Marikina strung back to back wins for the first time this season thanks to goals from David Basa and Kouichi Belgira on opposite halves.
After a tight first half, Basa finally got that equalizer following a free header off a corner in the added time of the first half.
Belgira then doubled that lead in the second half, getting to the scoresheet for the first time in five games.
JPV controlled possession and dictated the tempo the rest of the way with their signature patient build-up and short quick passes.
“We had a lot of accomplishments during our two matches from Stallion to Ilocos, so it seems that all the hard work is paying off because we really try to impose our style of play. We really had to control the tempo of the game. I think that’s the way we can dominate the game as it progresses,” said JPV assistant Frank Muescan who represented head coach Dan Padernal in the post-match presser.
“All the players are responding to our style of play. We do it in training and we apply it in the game,” he added.
The win kept Marikina at third place as they moved to nine points after five outings. Ilocos on the other hand continued its struggles, losing its third in four games and staying at sixth place with just a single point.
