THE Philippines could not hold on to an early lead, bowing to Vietnam, 2-1, in the opening match of the AFF Under-22 LG Cup on Sunday at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Jeremiah Borlongan scored in the 51st minute but the U22 Azkals, but Vietnam took control with goals by Tran Danh Trung in the 74th miute and Lee Minh Binh in the 78th.
“The boys fought hard. But we collapsed towards the end. This is the result of just two weeks of training,” said national Under-22 coach Anto Gonzales in the AFF website. “I don’t blame the players. They did well under the circumstances.”
Thailand beat Timor Leste, 1-0, in the opener.
The Philippines will take on Thailand on Wednesday.

The Tigers beat La Salle, 3-1, while the Tamaraws beat University of the East, 4-1.
Conrado Dimacali (17th), Juan Rodrigo Villanueva (36th), and Glenn Thomas Ramos (69th) scored after UST conceded the first goal of the match.
Jermi Darapan (30th) and Chester Gio Pabualan (49th) made it 2-0, before Dominque Canonigo (61st) and Alex Rayos (67th) made it a rout for the Tamaraws.
Adamson drew with National University, 1-1, after Jackson Lee Ramos scored on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
