GREEN Archers United pounced on Dolphins XI’s shaky backline and scored an easy 7-2 victory on Tuesday night in the United Football League Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Substitute John Melliza scored a brace, while four other Green Archers found the back of the net as the club flaunted its various weapons on offense to notch its first win in the tournament.
With four points overall, the team now moved to solo second behind Kaya in Group B.
Arnie Pasinabo drew first blood in the 13th minute, while Tating Pasilan doubled the lead 10 minutes later as the veterans provided the Green Archers’ first two goals in the first half.
After Melliza scored from close range 20 minutes into the second half to give the Green Archers a commanding 3-0 lead, the Dolphins scored their breakthrough goal in the 72nd minute, courtesy of a Romnick Echin strike off a penalty kick.
But just a few seconds later, Green Archers’ Nikko Villa caught the Dolphins’ defense napping as he struck to douse the opponents’ thoughts of a comeback.
Paolo Salenga scored the second goal for Dolphins in the 76th minute as he slipped past a defender and succeeded in taking the Green Archers’ goalkeeper in Patrick Deyto one on one.
Ayi Aryee then scored on a long-range strike in the 82nd minute, before Melliza scored his second goal of the match eight minutes later as both players completed the rout for the Green Archers.
The 26-year-old Pasilan, the team’s skipper, gave credit to the midfield tandem of Aryee and Agbayomi Olowoyeye, who both did a better job facilitating the offense compared to the team’s 1-1 draw against Kaya last week.
“Compared sa Kaya game, maganda ang laro ng midfield namin ngayon,”
Despite the lopsided triumph, the Green Archers coach still rued the goals his team surrendered in the second half.
“Yung depensa namin nawawala yung shape. Nagka-kanya-kanya sila,” Rodolfo Alicante said.
