Giorgos Karagounis scored a goal in first-half stoppage time to lift 2004 champion Greece past Russia 1-0 and into the quarterfinals of Euro 2012 on Saturday at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland.
The Greece skipper hit his shot low under goalie Vyacheslav Malafeev and the Greeks managed to survive an aggressive Russian attack. The Russians, semifinalist four years ago, had 25 shots on goal against the Greeks’ five.
Also through to the quarterfinals is the Czech Republic, which dashed Poland’s Euro dream with a 1-0 victory over the co-hosts at the Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw.
Petr Jiráek scored in the 72nd minute when Poland, needing a win to reach the quarterfinals, put its focus on attack and left gaping holes in midfield.
