A powerhouse Global squad picked up from where it left off last season in the United Football League as it thumped Pasargad, 3-1, on Tuesday night at the start of the UFL Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Izzo El-Habbib, Carli de Murga, and Misagh Bahadoran provided the goals for Global, the reigning League champion which boasts of nine national team players in its lineup.
“It was a confidence-boosting first win for us,” said Global manager Dan Palami, whose team seized the early lead in Group A.
El-Habbib, the Sudanese striker who often overshadowed his more prominent Azkals teammates last season, opened the scoring fray for the squad in the 15th minute.
An El-Habbib free kick miss six minutes before halftime then led to De Murga, the reigning League MVP, doubling the lead with his own strike.
Later on fellow Azkal Bahadorna gave the squad an insurmountable 3-0 lead nine minutes into the second half.
Masood Shedideh scored off a sensational bicycle kick in the 64th minute to give Pasargad its first goal, but failed to build on the momentum.
“I think when they (Pasargad) have more time together, they will be very dangerous. I’m just glad we got to play them when they are yet to develop fully,” Palami said.
