South China too much for Global FC, dents UFL side's chances of advancing in Asian tourney

    Apr 30, 2015

GLOBAL FC failed to build on a promising start as it bowed to South China, 3-0, in the opponent’s turf at the Mongkok Stadium in Hong Kong, leaving a huge dent in its Asian Football Confederation Cup campaign.

The reigning United Football League championships held the hosts scoreless for most of the first half, only to concede one late and two more after intermission to suffer the costly setback.

Global thus stayed in third spot with four points, behind second-running Pahang by three points.

But the Philippine representative can still advance to the knockout stage if it prevails against the Malaysian side in the last Group G match on May 13, owing to the head-to-head rule. The teams battled to a scoreless draw in Malaysia last March.

Coming off a historic 4-1 win over Yadanarbon of Myanmar two weeks ago at the Philippine Stadium, Global was eager to duplicate the feat and pull off an upset against group pacesetting South China.

But the UFL giants gave up a goal five minutes before first-half injury time when Cheng Lai Hin scored just seconds after coming in.

Bojan Malisic doubled the lead in the 55th minute, before Daniel Mcbreen added insult to injury by sneaking in the third goal two minutes into stoppage time.

Still, the result was an improvement for Global, which lost to South China, 6-1, at home in the opening match.
