GLOBAL Cebu stunned top seeded Meralco Manila, 2-1, in the first leg of the semifinals of the Philippines Football League on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Goals from Wesley dos Santos and Pika Minegishi completed a stunning turnaround for Global which looked a step slower than the Sparks for most of the match.
Tahj Minniecon was the lone goal scorer for Meralco.
"Meralco played really well. But I credit my players for never giving up and always believing," said Global head coach Akhbar Nawas.
"This is the third game we played in the seven games, it takes a toll on the players. It took a while for the players to get their engine running. Meralco is fresh so that's a good advantage," he added.
Dos Santos connected with Minegishi on the corner with the Brazilian heading in the equalizer in the 90th minute.
In the last possession of the match, late substitute Paulo Salenga made a good run on the right before locating Minegishi to a 93rd minute goal that gave Cebu an advantage heading to the return leg next week.
That basically negated all the work Meralco put in after controlling the match from start up until the final five minutes of the game.
Minniecon got his goal in the 61st minute after winning a penalty on Darryl Regala and beating Patrick Deyto on the spot.
But that all went for naught thanks to the late surge by Global led by Minigeshi, named man of the match.
"We never gave up with that. It was just hard work. Until the end we were focused. Meralco was really good today we never got anything in the first half, but we never gave up," Minigeshi said.
The teams play at the same venue on December 9 at 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, third seed Kaya Makati hosts second running Ceres Negros on Sunday, 4 p.m. at the Makati Coliseum.
