Jan 13, 2013

CERES emerged as the remaining non-United Football League team in the Philippine Football Federation-Smart Club National Championship after scoring a 1-0 upset over reigning UFL Cup champion Stallion in their Round of 16 matchup on Sunday at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

Kim Joong Muk slotted home the all-important goal in the first half for the Negros Occidental-based squad as it arranged a quarterfinal duel with defending champion Global, which beat Nomads, 2-1, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium later in the day.

Byeong Jun Yoon, a former Stallion booter, assisted on his fellow Korean’s left-footed strike after he found Kim with a cross from the left side.

National team players Carli de Murga and Patrick Reichelt struck in the second half for Global, while Nomads’ goal came from a consolation conversion off a penalty shot in injury time.

Earlier at Rizal, Pasargad defeated Philippine Army, 2-1 to likewise clinch a quarterfinal berth opposite General Trias.
