GENERAL Trias held Pasargad to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night and advanced to the quarterfinals of the United Football League Cup at the University of Makati pitch.
Ji Hun Song scored the lone goal for the Koread-led squad, which finished the four-game elimination round with eight points, and joined groupmate and tournament favorite Global in the Round of 8.
Masood Shadideh, who fired five goals in Pasargad’s 8-0 shutout of Socceroo two weeks ago, equalized for Pasargad early in the second half, but failed to convert an attempt one minute into extra time as the Iranian-laden club bowed out of contention, finishing with six points in four matches.
“Pasargad is a very good team, but luck was just on our side today,” General Trias coach Byung Jik Min said through an interpreter.
In the nightcap, Stallion ended Philippine Air Force’s reign as champion as it overwhelmed the Airmen, 5-1, to likewise clinch a quarterfinal berth.
Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez fired a brace, while Joaco Canas, OJ Clarino, and Lee Joo Young all found the back of the net for Stallion, who eliminated the Airmen from contention.
With nine points in four matches, Stallion now sits atop Group D ahead of Philippine Army, which has eight points.
The Airmen, whose lone goal came from Ian Araneta off a free kick in the second half, still have a game left in their schedule. The match, however, will have no bearing anymore as the most the Airmen could do is hike their point total to seven.
