ANOTHER Azkals captain has decided to hang up his boots.
Rob Gier on Wednesday announced his retirement from football after a glorious career with the national team as well as in England.
The 35-year-old Filipino-British booter is the second Azkals skipper to retire after Chieffy Caligdong did so – at least in the national level – in 2014.
“All good things must come to an end so today I would like to announce that my playing career has now drawn to a close,” Gier said in a Facebook post.
Gier, who has played 66 matches and scored two goals for the Azkals, hinted after the 2014 Suzuki Cup that it could be his last stint in the biennial tournament to give way to the younger batch.
“Football has given me everything: I have travelled the world, won trophies, played for and against some amazing teams, met wonderful people, played in the best stadiums in the world, in front of the most passionate fans in the world, seen a whole country's footballing landscape change virtually overnight, scored some (not many) goals, made some great tackles, captained a nation, laughed and cried,” he said.
“But most importantly I managed to realise my childhood dream of being a footballer,” added Gier, who will now focus on his family and coaching career.
