    UFL postpones Finals to give way to Azkals' Suzuki Cup preparations

    WITH national interest high on its priority, the United Football League decided on Friday to postpone the scheduled Nov. 19 Finals between Global and Stallion set at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

    The decision to move the winner-take-all showdown to a later date was made at the last minute to give way to the Philippine men’s football team’s preparations for the coming Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.

    UFL media officer Rick Olivares made a formal announcement on the matter in his Twitter account @rickyolivares Friday.

    “The risk of injury was too great. And the UFL decided not to jeopardize the national team's chances,” Olivares posted on his account.

    The postponement was certainly welcomed with open arms by both teams, which have a combined 11 players who are members of the national team competing in the Suzuki Cup starting on Nov. 24 when the Azkals meet the host team.

    Global owner Dan Palami had earlier hinted the reigning League champion would likely be without Marvin and Marwin Angeles, Misagh Bahadoran, Jeff Christiaens, Carli de Murga, Juani Guirado, Demit Omphroy, Patrick Reichelt, Matt Uy, and Denis Wolf for the scheduled finals on Monday.

    The Stallion is likewise set to miss the services of national team player Jason de Jong and coach Ernie Nierras, who is now in the US to handle the national women’s team competing in the LA Viking Cup.

    No date has yet been made as to when the UFL Finals will be held.
