Cinderella run comes to an end as Filipina booters settle for silver in AFC U-14 girls regional championship

Jun 6, 2016

THE magic wore off as the clock struck twelve for the Philippines as it absorbed a 1-0 loss to Thailand in the final of the Asian Football Confederation Under-14 Girls’ Regional Championship at the Chao Anouvong Stadium on Sunday night in Vientiane, Laos.

The Filipina booters’ Cinderella run unfortunately came to an end after surrendering an early goal that proved enough to seal the deal as they wound up as runners-up.

Still, it was a silver that glittered like gold as the teenage Filipinas of coach Joyce Landagan made the country with a remarkable result after another that paved the way for a run to the final.

The defeat at the hands of the Thais was the Philippines’ only loss in the tournament where it won thrice, including a 5-1 rout of Myanmar in the semifinal, and settled for a draw once.

Phattharanit Duangkaew struck the lone goal that mattered 19 minutes into the match when the Thai booter found an opening after a scramble near the box.
