WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Sarina Bolden scored the first-ever goal of the Philippines in the Fifa Women’s World Cup, giving the Filipinas a 1-0 lead at halftime in their match against host New Zealand.



The 27-year old attacker, who plays professionally in Australia headed home the historic goal off a cross by Sara Eggesvik, sparking celebrations not just at the Wellington Regional Stadium but also back home.

New Zealand goalkeeper Victoria Esson couldn’t get the handle on the ball following the header of Bolden, giving the Fil-Am strike star her 22nd international goal and the Philippines its first ever in a game of this magnitude.
Bolden’s goal bolstered the Philippines’ bid to advance to the Round of 16 following their 2-0 loss to Switzerland last Friday.
New Zealand entered the match on a high, having won its first-ever World Cup contest at the expense of Norway, 1-0.
