Filipinas rout hosts Cambodia to inch closer to Asian Cup berth

THE Philippines routed host Cambodia, 6-0, on Wednesday at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh to step closer to clinching a berth in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026.

The Filipinas captured their second win of the qualifiers in convincing fashion to move to within at least a draw of returning to the Women’s Asian Cup following their 2022 appearance where they secured a place in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Philippines will look to qualify against Hong Kong on Saturday at the National Olympic Stadium. Hong Kong kept its hopes alive of making it to the Asian Cup with a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia earlier in the day.

Alexa Pino scored her second international goal of her career in the 18th to keep the Philippines going early.

Meryll Serrano found the back of the net two consecutive times in the 19th and 36th for the Filipinas.

The breaks also went the Filipinas’ way when Somrit Nimol had an own goal in the 40th off a cross by Philippines’ Sofia Wunsch.
