THE Philippines lost to Syria, 5-2, on Thursday night in matchday one of the second round of the Asian Qualifiers for the Fiba World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

The Azkals failed to take advantage after an early goal by Javier Patiño in the sixth minute to drop their home match played at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

Omar Alsoma scored two goals including the equalizer in the 14th for Syria to pick up three points to start off its campaign. Alsoma also converted in the 55th for a commanding gap.

Khaled Mobayeb (30th) and captain Firas Al Khatib (48th) also scored in the match for Syria.

Mike Ott slashed the deficit to two goals in the 83th but Mahmoud Al Mawas responded two minutes later with a goal.

The Azkals will face Guam on Tuesday, September 10.
