FEU edges National U to stay unbeaten in UAAP football

Feb 19, 2017

FAR Eastern University remained unbeaten in the UAAP football tournament as it scraped past National University, 1-0, on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Tamaraws got a huge helping hand, literally, from the Bulldogs' keeper Hayeson Pepito, who mishandled Audie Menzie's shot, the ball bouncing into the goal, turning into the winner for The Tamaraws.

"It's a win. Can’t say we're happy about our performance," said FEU head coach Vince Santos.

"NU came out playing really low, we didn't expect that and we made some adjustments on halftime. The goal came and it was unfortunate (for them) but we'll take the win," he added.

For a moment there it looked like an own goal for the keeper but officials after the match credited Menzie for the goal.

It was an unfortunate play for Pepito after some impressive saves just before the half to keep the Bulldogs afloat.

NU had its chances to equalize late but substitute keeper Ray Joyel made excellent saves in injury time as the Tams moved to second place with nine points, trailing Ateneo by three.
