FAR Eastern University scraped past a struggling La Salle side, 1-0, to stay unbeaten in the UAAP Season 79 men’s football tournament on Thursday at the Moro Lorenzo Field in Quezon City.
Nicholas Ferrer scored the lone goal of the evening, a half volley from inside the box in the 34th minute as the Tamaraws posted their fourth win in as many games to improve to second place with 12 points.
Ateneo still paces the league with 15 points after five games played.
"I think the team is slowly accepting the change in the system," said FEU coach Vince Santos.
"We have a long season to go. We have to work on our finishing," he added.
Global FC midfielder Paolo Bugas had his hand in the goal as he whipped in a cross from the left flank and onto the sliding Ferrer in the box.
Ferrer calmly controlled the ball and sent his strike past the La Sallian keeper and into the right side of the net.
Not only did the Tamaraws kept their record unscathed, they also managed to snag their fourth clean sheet in the season, the only team in the tournament which has yet to concede a goal.
On the other hand, La Salle’s struggles on offense continued as they failed to get into the scoreboard for the third consecutive time.
The defeat sent the Green Booters to the fifth spot with just four points after University of Santo Tomas took fourth place with its victory over Adamson earlier in the day.
