FAR Eastern University bounced back in extra time after giving up a late goal in regulation to beat University of the Philippines, 4-1, on Thursday at the FEU Diliman field to take Game One of the UAAP Season 76 men’s football final at the FEU Diliman field.
The Tamaraws are one win away from their first title in four years after scoring three goals in extra time.
Game Two is set Sunday at the FEU Diliman pitch.
FEU last won the UAAP crown in 2010 (Season 72) before UP won back-to-back crowns the following seasons.
Josh Mulero broke the tie 11 minutes into extra time as the Nigerian scored off a failed clearance by UP.
Harold Alcoresa beat UP goalkeeper Nathaniel Ace Villanueva for a 3-1 lead four minutes later.
Five minutes later, Jesus Melliza scored for the three-goal FEU cushion.
FEU came back after the Tamaraws were forced into extra time when Carlos Monfort’s header in the 89th minute tied the match at 1-1.
After back-to-back saves, Villanueva was caught out of position following a failed UP clearance allowing Mulero to give FEU the lead right back in extra time.
Arnel Amita’s goal inside the penalty box in the seventh minute gave the Tamaraws an early lead before the late UP goal.
FEU also won Game One of the women’s football finals on Thursday morning with a 1-0 victory over University of Santo Tomas.
Ina Araneta, sister of former national team member Ian Araneta, scored the lone goal for the Lady Tamaraws, who are eyeing for their second straight crown.
