PHILIPPINE Army solidified its position on top of Group D as it forced defending champion Air Force to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night in the United Football League Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Troopers leaned on an early goal by Laurence Bedua, and bucked a second-half fightback from their rivals despite being down to 10 men to score the stalemate, giving the squad seven points in three matches.

After returning national team player Ian Araneta opened the second half with a quick equalizing goal, the Airmen seemed poised to pull away after the Troopers went limping when they lost one booter to a red card infraction eight minutes later.

But despite conjuring more scoring chances from former Azkal Yanti Barsales, the Airmen could not capitalize and settled for the result.

The Airmen nevertheless overtook Stallion in the standings and moved to solo second with four points in two matches.
