DAN Palami has stepped down as team manager of the Philippine Azkals to give the new leadership of the Philippine Football Federation a free hand in deciding the future of the national team.
Palami 'gives way'
Palami made the announcement in a press conference where he was joined by PFF president John Gutierrez.
“I want to give (Gutierrez) the elbow room and free hand to do what he thinks is necessary for Philippine football to move forward,” said Palami in a statement.
Palami entered the men’s national team program in December 2009, and made his presence felt immediately.
In only the first tournament of the national team in the Southeast Asian region under his watch, the Azkals made history by reaching the semifinals of the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2010.
Azkals stunner
In the tournament, the Filipino booters shocked host Vietnam, 2-0, on December 5, 2010 in a match that became fondly known to football fans as the ‘Miracle in Hanoi.’
The Philippines also qualified for the first time in the AFC Asian Cup in 2019 under Palami’s tutelage.
