    Thomas Dooley expects Azkals to show up for Peace Cup camp in decent shape

    PHILIPPINE men’s football team coach Thomas Dooley hopes the Azkals haven’t been too comfortable with their vacation ahead of their buildup for the Peace Cup that kicks off next month.

    The Azkals haven’t seen action since their heartbreaking one-goal loss to Palestine in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup last May 31 and some, according to Dooley, have gone on a break for a month or more.

    And the German-American mentor expects them to have spent at least some individual training during their layoff as the Peace Cup is just two weeks away.

    The Filipino booters start their title defense on September 3 against Chinese Taipei at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

    “We have to rely on those players (that they did) something on their own to stay in shape,” Dooley said on Tuesday when he also introduced as new assistant coach in German Sebastian Stache.

    The Azkals start their local training on Friday, with twice daily practices at the Rizal pitch during the first week, then adding some scrimmages in the second week.

    Dooley expects the Azkals to enter training camp as fit as possible.

    “I expect them to come in a decent shape,” the former US World Cup skipper stressed.
