EMELIO "Chieffy" Caligdong may be staying home after all.
Amid reports that the Philippine Azkals star winger will be migrating to the United States with his family, Caligdong said he remains open to the possibility of staying in the Philippines and remaining involved in the development of football.
The Barotac Nuevo native will be discharged from the Philippine Air Force in the first week of December, which means that he will no longer be playing for the Airmen in the next season of the United Football League.
He is expected to mentor the Green Archers United FC and there are talks he could be putting on his boots anew and play for the team.
“Posible naman ’yun, bakit hindi, para makatulong din ako sa ibang team sa UFL,” said Caligdong, who has also been named as one of the faces of Globe’s corporate social responsibility program.
Caligdong, arguably the best-known homegrown Azkal, earlier said he is set to join his wife in the US. But plans may be put on hold as his role in local football becomes bigger.
“Siguro pero may Plan A, B at C, mag-uusap pa kami ng family ko,” said Caligdong, in a press conference at the Legend Villas in Mandaluyong City on Tuesday.
“Opportunity rin kasi ito para sa pamilya ko kaya pag-uusapan rin namin. Kung mag-stay ako dito, wala namang problema ’yun,” said Caligdong, who as Globe Telecom’s sports ambassador will take part in various football programs for the company.
Caligdong, who was joined in the press conference by Globe president and chief executive officer Ernest Cu, will also be joining his Azkals teammates in the United States for training camp in preparation for the AFF Suzuki Cup this November.
