ATENEO continued its dominant start in the UAAP Men's football tournament as it battered National University 3-0 in front of its home crowd at the Moro Lorenzo field last Thursday.
Jarvey Gayoso and Samuel Lim once again found the back of the net as the Blue Eagles solidified their hold of the top spot on the table early with a perfect six points from two games.
Mario Ceniza also got himself in the scoresheet for the first time with the Blue Eagles feasting on every Bulldogs error, turning almost everything into scoring opportunities.
"Nung second half, na-realize nila na they need to step up and ayun, nakita ko naman na from the start ang ganda ng play form nila," said Ateneo coach JP Merida.
The win was Ateneo's second straight clean sheet after mauling Adamson in its opener 4-0.
The breakthrough came at added time of the first half with Gayoso releasing a streaking Lim on the counter. Lim continued his run up the left flank to beat Hayeson Pepito for the first goal of the night, just seconds before interval.
A rash challenge by National U's Ross Lawagan led to his early exit in the game and the second goal of the game came soon after for the Blue Eagles when Lawagan tangled with Julian Roxas inside the box, with the referee quickly pointing to the spot as he raised his red card.
Gayoso calmly sank the penalty before Ceniza wrapped things up in the 78th minute for the Blue Eagles, with Pepito once again left exposed on Ateneo's deadly counter.
The Bulldogs never had a chance from there as Ateneo's continuous pressure from the field gave the Bulldogs a hard time setting up.
"Talagang nag-focus kami sa defending. Talagang there's no reason para mag-concede kami kasi ayun ang pina-practice namin," Merida added.
