THE Philippine women’s football team ended its Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign on a positive note, whipping Bangladesh, 4-0, on the final day of the tournament on Saturday night in the opponent’s turf at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
Their quest for World Cup glory derailed after Thailand booked the lone ticket to the Asian Cup next year with a 5-1 win over Iran earlier, the Malditas still mustered sufficient resolve to score the blowout victory over the hosts.
Marisa Park shone brightest with a brace, while Cristina delos Reyes and Cat Barnekow chipped in a goal apiece for the Filipinas, who finished second in the four-team group with six points with a goal difference of +9.
The Malditas needed Thailand to lose in their Southeast Asian rival’s game and they saw a ray of hope after the Thais were in a scoreless half against Iranians.
But the Thais suddenly pulled away after the restart to break the hearts of the Filipinos.
