THE busy schedule of the Philippine men’s football team in preparation for the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup continues as the Azkals are set to play Bahrain in a friendly this October.
According to the AFF’s official website the match is slated Oct. 12 in Manama, the Bahrain capital.
Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta confirmed the news on Saturday.
The game is considered a welcome development for the Azkals, whose two recent friendlies have been called off, one against the US Virgin Islands supposedly on Saturday in Indiana, and the other versus Indonesia in September in Jakarta.
The popular Philippine football team, which bowed to Premier Development League side Chicago Inferno last Sunday, 1-3, are still in the Windy City of Chicago, compensating for the cancelled US Virgin Islands friendly with rigorous practice sessions.
The Filipino booters will conclude their two-week US training camp on Sunday.
After the US trip, the Azkals will start a hectic September schedule with a series of friendlies abroad against Cambodia (Sept. 5), Singapore two days later, and Laos on Sept. 10.
The national team will then head over to Bacolod City for the four-nation Paulino Alcantara Cup to face entries from Guam, Macau, and Chinese Taipei from Sept. 25 to 29.
The four-nation tournament, formerly referred to as the Long Teng Cup, is named after one of the best booters ever to play for the Philippine team.
Meanwhile, Filipino-Spanish forward Angel Guirado has signed a one-year contract with Indian team Salgaocar FC.
The 6-foot-2 striker last played professionally for Global FC, a local squad which he steered to the United Football League title in June.
